If you spend your drive home from work moving at a snail’s pace on San Diego’s jam-packed freeways, it may seem difficult to imagine how an accident could occur. After all, you can’t crash if you can’t go anywhere, right? According to national statistics, rush hour is the most dangerous time to be out on the road. Learn more about the threat of rush hour accidents below, and speak with a lawyer if you’ve been injured in a rush hour crash.
Rush hour a common time for accidents
Data gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that rush hour is a time when a large share of crashes occur. According to a study of NHTSA data, the busy hours between 3 to 6pm are when crashes causing property damage and non-fatal injury are most likely to occur. The more cars there are on the road, the more likely those cars will be involved in an accident.
Watch out for these common factors in rush hour collisions
While the sheer number of cars on the road will always make crashes more likely, there are several common causes of crashes during rush hour which you can take steps to prepare for and avoid. These are:
- Distractions: It can be tempting to pull out your phone and send texts or scroll through your Facebook feed while bored in traffic.
- Road rage: As infuriating as gridlock traffic can be, don’t allow yourself to be drawn into high-conflict situations on the road. Don’t cut off or tail other drivers, and don’t engage with a driver who appears to be angry.
- Auto-pilot: If you drive the same route home every day, you could probably follow it blindfolded, but every day on the road is different. Make sure you stay engaged on the road, being attentive to other drivers’ behavior, even if you know the roads like the back of your hand. You may be able to stay more engaged—and maybe even find a less-congested route—by taking new paths home from time to time.
- Fatigue: After a long day of work, you may be ready for a nap. Fatigue is cited as one of the most common reasons for motor vehicle accidents. Avoid nodding off behind the wheel by getting a full night’s sleep before work or carpooling with a friend.
